In October of 1993, Gomaco car #1979 paid a short visit to our
rails. Gomaco, a builder of highway construction machinery and
street car replicas, decided in June of 1993 to build a streetcar
to exhibit in the Fall APTA International Public Transit Expo in New
Orleans in early October. By late September, the car was built, but
had not been tested, because Gomaco's diesel electric generator was
on loan to the vintage trolley line in Denver Colorado. So we
invited, and Gomaco agreed, to return from New Orleans by way of
Dallas Texas, and test their new car on our track. 1979 rolled
along our rails and provided lots of excitement for a day and a
half. We then bid a fond farewell to the newest car to ever run on
MATA's rails. 1979 is a single truck car built on a stretched
Melbourne truck. The frame and body were fabricated by Gomaco in
their shops.
