space returns null value
space returns is a web based project that contemplates the unseen spaces of production of digital technology. As an artist and a technology worker, this project attempts to bridge both worlds in which I operate. It contests the ideology that the internet transcends space and embodiment, that, as they say, "there's no there there." The project addresses the internet itself, refusing to accept it as a "transparent" medium.
This series of images, "space returns null value," from the larger project was shot in empty Silicon Valley office space after the burst of the "internet bubble." The title of the work describes the economic relation of the crash to commercial real estate, following the economic as though it were a line of code; that is, in the language of the internet itself.
