I tried a couple Google searches (which led me to the Wikipedia article on toilet paper for some reason I can't fathom), but didn't have much luck until a search for 'gloss paper' brought up this glossy paper page, wherein I learn that it's kaolin clay, or else calcium carbonate, that makes paper glossy. And radioactive. Cool!
