If fifty million people say a foolish thing, it's still a foolish thing.

The Company's Concerned

From Reuters: "The company is very concerned that you may neglect your family and they don't want you spending so much time at work."

Am I the only one who finds this incredibly amusing? This really says something about my work life, doesn't it.

Fantasy is Crap

I have an email sitting in my Inbox with the subject line "Re: blogstuff (fwd) (fwd)". I have all these great ideas for entries that I would take the time to actually write if I had the time to actually write. Instead I find myself, like, doing things instead of writing.

I know, I know, you're my loyal audience, it doesn't reflect well on me as your servant to not actually write these entries. But I offer you this bit of solace--imagine how invigorating it'll actually be when I finally get off my ass (well, technically get on my ass) and write about these things.

For example, several weeks ago I went to see China Mieville (pardon me for not including the accent, I'm still trying to figure out how to run ping on my new G4 Cube, so I can't be bothered with things like accents...oh, wait, yes I can, I can just copy it from another page...here, put this letter (é) earlier in the sentence, would you? You're a doll, thanks.) do a book reading (remember back when I started this sentence? You're not going to trick me into a sentence fragment with the occasional parenthetical note!) at the University Bookstore. He was great, and I got to gush about my RPG interpretation of his works. (I've since decided that this is perhaps a weakness in his writing, but I find it so charming that I shan't tell anyone about the specifics of my decision.) The man's a freaking charmer.

Anyway, I'd read this article before I went to the reading, and then he spent a big chunk of the Q&A session expanding on the idea. Very intriguing stuff.

So, yeah, I don't really have anything to add to that. I just thought I'd share. Oh, and if you haven't already, read the Ping customer reviews. One of 'em is a classic.

wo ist eric?

Ach, so long with no update. I have good excuses, though!

  • I switched computers from an ancient desktop to a fancy new laptop, and in the process upgraded versions of OpenBSD.
  • I also bought a computer desk.
  • The laptop doesn't work very well with the computer desk.
  • I'm still reading Gravity's Rainbow. Exactly two-thirds of the way through now.
  • I've gotten hooked on Shadowrun 3rd Edition. They made some good changes from 2nd Edition.
  • While switching computers around at home, I also switched computers at work. This allowed me to discover the fact that I'd forgotten the password I'd setup for this weblog. Then I forgot the clue that I had installed for retrieving my password. Fortunately, the system isn't really that secure, so I was able to hack my way in. I'm not sure that it's completely possible for anyone to hack their way in, though, so don't even think of trying. I've got my eye on you, punk!
  • I really don't have another item, but I'd already done the bulletpoint, so what other option is there?
  • Oh wait, thought of something else--the laptop isn't actually new, it's refurbished. Gotta recycle, doncha know.
  • Man, I could use some URI's to sprinkle throughout this entry. But I can't figure out how to do them comfortably with Opera.
  • Like "Opera". That should be a hyperlink to go somewhere. But I don't think it's opera.org.
  • Oh, and don't you hate how every web browser displays a page differently? I thought I had it looking presentable in IE, and good in Netscape, and then Opera...okay, enough about Opera. Really, this isn't just a big excuse to work the word "opera" into two entries in a row.

I promise, more interesting entries soon. I'll let you figure out whether I mean that future entries will be more interesting or that there will be a greater number of interesting entries like this one. Heh. Uh, yeah.
