Sevens

Mark A. Mandel
Ttto "Moon Above and Fire Below", by Heather Rose Jones
[Also "The Hyper Hilton" by Gary McGath
("Four above and six below...").]

CHORUS (repeat after each verse)
Four in front and three behind
And nothing much to call a mind.
Fur and fear and appetite
And a cage to clean each seventh night.

Come in, come in to our pet store,
We've lizards, birds, and beasts galore,
And what is more,
We've guinea pigs on sale this week,
Come hear them squeak!

Just pick one up and feel it purr,
You can't tell if it's him or her
In all that fur.
It's warm and soft and cute and round
And half a pound.

Now here's a cage and here's a dish,
This brand of chow they find dee-lish.
A wooden house,
Some litter chips, a water jar,
And there you are!

If you inspect the feet, you'll find
Four nails in front and three behind.
In half a year
Just bring him in; we'll trim his feet
And keep them neat.

"Oh, mother, father, look at that.
Our guinea pig is getting fat!"
And pretty soon
Where we had bought one single beast
We've four... at least!

The pet store was surprised indeed,
"We thought they were too young to breed."
But now we know,
Without a trek to distant star,
What tribbles are!
