Riddle of Threes

Mark A. Mandel Copr. 2003
ttto Threes, Lackey/Fish

[Where you see a backtick (`), a.k.a. grave accent, the first downbeat of the line goes on the syllable just after it. "( )" shows a one-beat rest.]

If you want to try solving the riddle, cover up the fourth verse until you have read the first three.
When you start on the fourth verse, uncover just one line at a time.
When you reach the time warning, STOP until you are ready to see the answer.

1. `Rescued from captivity, I sought the northward way
To my `ancestors' free country that across the desert lay.
The slave who stole and rode me off at first was little joy:
He `said I was his horse! Well, he was equally my boy!

Three who took the road with me: a mare of my own kind,
A princess, and that boy I sometimes wished I'd left behind.

2. I `am a town that boasts an inn that offers food and rest
To troops of weary travelers arriving from the west.
As long as they are peaceable, they're welcome one and all
For `in me live in harmony the Big Folk and the Small.

Three things never do when you are staying at an inn:
Con`sort with tramps, or disappear, or bring Black Riders in.

3. `I'm a trading ship that sailed to distant southern shores
And found a creature stranger than was ever known before.
This alien wished to hire us, with knowledge as his goal,
To venture past the Rim, to the impossible South Pole!

Three things that this ship has seen I never thought to spy:
The Rim, the stars below the world, and the ground seen from the sky.

4. We `three are very diff'rent, and from diff'rent worlds we hail.
The stallion runs, the town stays put, the ship moves under sail.
`What we have in common ( ) is what you must divine.
You `barely have ten seconds till we reach the final line!

Three the men who gave us life and wrote our history:
Jack's `horse, John's town, and Harry's ship, and all of us named Bree!
