No Safe Ground

A shining autumn morning and you're rolling down the road.
Turn on the radio-- and you're on instant overload.
The World Trade Center hit, the heart of New York City's down!
You never stop your screaming as you drive on into town.
No safe ground, no safe ground, no safe ground any more.

The place you work is paralyzed with sorrow, shock, and fear.
Midday you give it up for home and those you hold most dear.
You roar with grief and weep with rage, you're anxious and perplexed:
"Are my friends safe?" "Who did it?" "Why?" and "Where will they strike next?"

Down with the old assumptions, out with the easy ways.
Your greatest fears and nightmares never went this far.
Sooner or later, terror may come to you.
Don't think that it can't happen where you are.
No safe ground, no safe ground, no safe ground any more.

The war hawks shout, "Let's bomb them out, whoever they may be."
Your neighbor says, "I know just who, and they don't look like me."
The television preacher calls, "Go mend your evil ways,
Root out the wicked from your midst, these are the final days."
No safe ground, no safe ground, no safe ground any more.

You mention to a friend that there's no safety any more.
He asks you, "How's it different from the way it was before?
We never had immunity, I've tried to tell you so.
It isn't any different now." You answer, "Now we know!"

Down with the old assumptions, out with the easy ways.
Your greatest fears and nightmares never went this far.
Sooner or later, terror may come to you.
Don't think that it can't happen where you are.
No safe ground, no safe ground, no safe ground any more.

As weeks go by you're scared to fly, you're scared of shopping malls,
At this rate, soon you'll be too scared to leave your home at all.
You realize that's what terror is; you cannot let them win.
You cast that demon from your soul the same way it came in.

(Break:)
Ain't no place secure, not unless we make it.
Nothing is for sure, but damned if we don't try!
We're all on the front lines now, Flight 93 has taught us how.
Don't run and hide, but recognize: sometimes it's fight or die.
No safe ground, no safe ground, no safe ground any more. (2x)
