Little Man

Verse tune original
Chorus ttto Run For Your Life, Lennon/McCartney (Rubber Soul)

Radiation knocked out all the power.
Rocks came down like hailstorms out of Hell.
Instead of working, all you did was cower
Until your sanctuary crashed and fell.

At school the others used to call you crazy
And hound you into hiding every day
Until the playground opened up beneath them
And storm winds blew them half a mile away.

Now you run for your life while you can, little man,
Hide your head in the sand, little man.
If you don't make a stand, it's the end, little man.

The sky is coming down on every nation
and taking out the cities one by one.
But all you think of is your own salvation,
While others stand and fight, you cut and run.

But no one else can stop the sky from falling
Or summon Terra to defend her own.
Will Chicken Little hear the future calling
Or be the last to die, and die alone?

Will you run for your life while you can, little man?
Hide your head in the sand, little man?
Or will you make a stand at the end, little man?

Notes

The Occasion

Written for "Quick, We Need a Theme Song" at Confluence 2004.

The Premise

The premise of this event is that a super-humongous conglomerate media company wants to promote its reissues of old books by providing theme songs and media tie-ins. But they're cheap, and they're insisting that the job be done fast... and they've misplaced the list of titles, so all they can provide for each book is one paragraph from the back cover blurb. And those blurbs were written by the young nephew of the Chairman of the Board, who skims instead of reading...

The Blurb

"As Earth is ruthlessly bombarded from space, one desperate coward flees for his life from one hiding place to another. While he shirks his duty to seek survival, cities and nations die. Can he summon his bravery and his mysterious mastery of nature before it's too late? Time is running out for the whole world!"

The Procedure

Randy Hoffman handed out the blurbs on 3 x 5 cards at 2:50 p.m. on Saturday. At 6 pm they were read aloud, the performers/songwriters announced, the songs performed, and the actual titles of the works that the songs are (supposed to be) about revealed.

The Book

This blurb turned out to be for H. G. Wells's War of the Worlds. We were all surprised.

Jealousy

Ben Newman was also in this event, with a different book and blurb. He produced a song with a much better lyric than mine and original music. I hate him.
