The Good Ship "Manatee": The Real Story

ttto "The Golden Vanity" (trad.)
words copyright 1999 Mark A. Mandel
with apologies to Debra Sanders for her song "The Good Ship Manatee"
and a nod to L. Neale Smith for his novel Henry Martyn

There was a ship that sailed upon the starry sea,
And the name of our ship was the "Golden Manatee",
And we feared we would be press-ganged by the Hanover na-vee
As we sailed upon the starry, starry sea,
As we sailed upon the starry sea.

Then up spoke our engineer, and boldly out spoke he:
"Suppose we all pretend that we're as crazy as can be.
Then the press gangs will not take us, but leave us roaming free
     To sail..."

So our captain used the Rec Room for a model of Versailles,
Doc waved a rusty scalpel 'round, and near took out my eye,
And the astrogator's garden tended toward carnivo-ry
     As we sailed...

And we built a reputation as the craziest of tars,
The engineer, he sang it up in all the joints and bars,
And 'twas said we were the strangest ship that ever sailed the stars
     As we sailed...

Now the press gangs will not touch us, for they fear our lunacy.
Privateers are superstitious, and they also let us be.
But the merchants know we're honest and will make delivery
As we sail upon the starry, starry sea,
As we sail upon the starry sea.
