Too early one morning, my co-worker's greeting me,
Bright at my door. Heading out for a meeting, we're
Driving together; she's parked on the street.
My wife asks her in for a quick bite to eat.
But we're barely on schedule and falling behind,
So I'm wiping the cobwebs and dust from my mind
As we head for the road and the rendezvous ten towns away.
For years we've been friends, swapping strange etymologies,
Intricate puns, tales of corporate folly. She's
Told me her troubles, I've told her of mine,
And we're just getting into... "Was that the town line?"
"Did we miss it?" "We'd better turn back." "What's the street?"
"He said left." "There it is!" "Hi, we've come here to meet--"
Oh, my God, the wrong building, wrong street, the wrong town! Lost our way!
We made every wrong turn in the book,
Every wrong turn in the book,
We made every wrong turn in the book
That we could have done.
For weeks I've been pushing myself; now exhaustion is
Taking its toll; it's no wonder we're lost. And as
Later, arrived in the right place at last,
I'm thinking it's time I went home and I crashed,
She folds both her hands over mine, saying "You
Need a hug, but you know this will just have to do",
And our eyes share a message that neither of us wants to say.
We made every wrong turn in the book,
Every wrong turn in the book,
We made every wrong turn in the book
That we could have done.
Now, you may have the thought in the front of your mind that this
Ballad will end with us closely entwined. But as
She loves her husband and I love my wife,
We're not gonna go ruin anyone's life.
We're colleagues, co-workers, twin spirits, good friends,
And that's how this story began as it ends--
It's a good thing we like it, 'cause that's how it's going to stay.
We made every wrong turn in the book,
Every wrong turn in the book,
We made every wrong turn in the book,
All except one.
