A Civil Campaign Suite

These songs are based on characters in Lois McMaster Bujold's novel A Civil Campaign. In 2000 I wrote a short song for Enrique and another for Mark. While rereading the book in the summer of 2002 I thought of providing a song for each of the POV characters: Miles, Ekaterin, Mark, Kareen, and Ivan.* Enrique already had one, and first Dono, then Lady Alys, insisted on joining in.

Here they are, arranged in the order of appropriate moments in the plot. Page references are to the Baen paperback first printing.

*Ivan: "Why am I always last?"
Ekaterin: "Because this story is about pairing off. Get yourself a fiancée --"
Kareen: "-- or an option --"
Miles: "-- or at least a steady girlfriend --"
Lord Mark: "-- and then you'll get your mother off your back, too."
All four: "It's all your fault!"
Mark the filker: "Besides, you get the first song. Move it, you're on!"

Ivan's Grumble

Ttto "My Bonnie Lies Over The Ocean", trad.
Chapter 1, pp. 37-39

My cousin's extremely persuasive.
My cousin is eloquent, too.
My cousin keeps talking me into
Whatever I don't want to do.

Bring down, bring down
Some of his own on my cousin's head.
Bring down, bring down
Bring cosmic justice to Miles!

Chapter 3, pp. 65-73; see also Chap. 11, p. 281

    Take away these twits!
    They are giving me fits
And I won't have them running my life.
    I have had my mind
    Too long confined,
I'm tired of being a wife.

    If there's any man,
    It's Lord Vorkosigan,
And he's not in the cards for me.
    Vormoncrief's a fool,
    Zamori's dull,
And for God's sake, not Byerly!

Enrique's Lament

Ttto "Little Buttercup", Gilbert & Sullivan, from "H.M.S. Pinafore"
Chapter 3, pp. 87ff.

[Picture Enrique alone on stage, a butterbug cupped in his palm.]

They all hate my butterbugs,
Poor little butterbugs,
    Though I could never tell why;
But still you're such lovely bugs,
Dear little butterbugs,
    Sweet little babies of mine.

Without hesitation you eat vegetation
Or Earth-biological waste,
And turn it to butter, which after you utter it,
Humans can season to taste.

I've cultures galore of intestinal flora
To tailor, arrange, and combine.
Disaccharide schemes that I see in my dreams
Can be breeding next evening by nine.

Then try of my butterbugs,
Dear little butterbugs;
Come, there's no need to be shy.
And taste of this butter,
This lovely bug butter,
That's made by my butterbugs; try!

Donna, Dono

Mark A. Mandel © 2002
Ttto "Dona, Dona", W: Aaron Zeitlin / M: Sholem Secunda
(English translation: Arthur Kevess & Teddi Schwartz)
Chapter 7, p. 170

On a jumpship bound for Beta
There's a lady in mourning black.
At the shuttleport three months later,
Strong and virile, he's coming back.

How the Vor are plotting,
They plot and scheme and fight!
Plot and plot the whole day through
And half the drunken night.

Dono, Donna, Donna, Dono,
Donna, Dono, Donna, Do',
Dono, Donna, Donna, Dono,
Donna, Dono, Donna, Do'.

Kareen's Resolution

Ttto "I Won't Grow Up", from the musical "Peter Pan", W: Carolyn Leigh / M: Mark Charlap
Chapter 11, p. 267

I will grow up!
And I'm going back to school.
I'm a woman with a lover,
Not a baby or a fool.

I won't remain a little girl
In Da's old Time-of-Isolation world,
I'm gonna grow up, gonna grow up, gonna grow up
For sure!

Miles's Effervescence

Ttto "The Band Played On", W: Charles B. Ward / M: John F. Palmer
(chorus, which is all anyone knows of it anyway)
(
Esperanto version)
Epilogue, p. 513

I fell in love with a beautiful lady
    -- She'll marry me!
She's brave and she's smart, with a virtuous heart,
    And she'll marry me!
Though my elegant plan blew apart, and she ran,
And I cried out, "She's going to flee!"
She went and proposed, and all Barrayar knows
    That she'll marry me!

Alys's Grand Levee

Mark A. Mandel © 2002
Ttto "Alice's Restaurant", Arlo Guthrie
Epilogue, pp. 515ff.

You can meet all society
At Alys's grand levee.
      (Including Gregor!)
You can meet all society
At Alys's grand levee.
Just walk right in and you'll be announced.
If ImpSec clears you, you won't get bounced.
You can meet all society
At Alys's grand levee.

Mark's Jingle

Mark A. Mandel © 2000
Ttto "Yankee Doodle Dandy", George M. Cohan
See note below

I like maple sugar brandy
Brewed from maple sugar mead
Right up in my own Dendarii hills --
You know it's just what you need.

Smooth as maple sugar candy,
Hard as sugar maple wood!
    On my word as Vorkosigan,
    Dendarii maple brandy
Will knock you for a loop
        and do you... good!

[In the Epilogue we see MPVK Enterprises' first product: maple ambrosia, Ma Kosti's miraculous blend of bug butter with maple mead from the meadery Miles runs to channel income to the hillfolk (p. 521). I imagine that Mark will soon figure out a way to make more money by converting more mead into yet another product that will be more popular than maple mead itself, which Ivan calls "the most disgusting, gut-destroying, guerilla attack-beverage ever brewed by man" (p. 519) and Miles concedes is an acquired taste... and, not incidentally, cementing family support for his business by making it a bigger customer of Miles's pet project.]
