Here are tables of contents for The Phoenix Guards, Five Hundred Years After, and Brokedown Palace, so that if they're ever published in variant editions or in translations you'll still be able to get some use out of my references by seeing what chapter each one is in, and roughly what part of the chapter. The contents for the Vlad novels are here.

To make this job easy on myself (I'm lazy), I'm using an HTML trick that lets me number each line of a list, so

1. 19
under "Jhereg" tells you that Chapter 1 of Jhereg starts on p. 19. The format isn't as pretty as it might be, but the information is all here. A page whose number is in parentheses is in the front matter of the book and the pages aren't numbered, but counting back from the first numbered page yields this number. A title in brackets is a descriptive label I have supplied for a section with no title.

I was nervous about this section because it seemed like a kind of extended direct quotation, even though the books themselves don't have Tables of Contents. I asked Brust about it, and he said to go ahead. So have fun!

The Phoenix Guards

The 34 chapters are divided in two Books of 17 chapters each. They are numbered "Chapter the First", "Chapter the Second", etc. In addition to a long, discursive title, each chapter has a running head that appears at the top of each right-hand page after the first page of the chapter, and which I append in curly braces and italics. Although I haven't seen the first (hardcover?) editions of The Phoenix Guards and Five Hundred Years After, I'd guess that their pagination is identical to that of the paperbacks, as is the case with Dragon.

I have copied the eccentric capitalization exactly as it appears in the text. Much of its irregularity is attributable to the division of the chapter titles into several lines, which I have not tried to reproduce. The first word of such a line is always capitalized, even a word such as "of" or "the" that would not normally be capitalized in the middle of a title. If you don't like it, blame Brust, who will undoubtedly blame Paarfi, who will pass the blame to the publisher. (The capitalization of the running heads, however, is mine, as they are printed all in uppercase.)

Brokedown Palace

There is a titled Prologue, an untitled Epilogue, and an untitled Interlude after each chapter but the last. The Interludes alternate between the growth of the Tree and Fenarian folk tales; I have provided descriptive titles in brackets for the latter. János, Jancsi, and Jani all look to me like Hungarian forms of John or Jack, and these stories remind me of the Jack tales that are so widespread in English and Appalachian folklore.
