Let's just state for the record that you should never, ever take my estimations of [a] room size or [b] crowd size at face value. I am utterly incompetent at telling the difference between twenty feet and forty feet, for example. Thinking about it more carefully, I would now say the concert room at Schuba's is about 30-40 feet long by about 25-30 feet wide. Still pretty small, and still about twice the size of my apartment. I heard that it holds about 150 people (no wonder it sold out so fast!) but I couldn't tell you how many were there, because I was squished up in the second "row" (ie, there was one person between me and the stage, Taylor's side) and couldn't see well behind me. It seemed full.

Meeting them again was nice, to be sure, but the concert was really fucking amazing. I have been to only a handful of concerts where the passon and skill and energy of the people onstage fully transported me into a state of near-ecstasy - where all pain, thirst, sweat, and other discomforts disappear and it's all about the joy of the music. And here they are, in no particular order:

1. The Flaming Lips and Butthole Surfers at Peony Park, Omaha Nebraska c. 1992
2. Nine Inch Nails at Lollapalooza 1, Kansas City Missouri 1991
3. Faith No More at the Moore Theatre, Seattle Washington c. 1996
4. Sideshow at Duffy's Tavern, Lincoln Nebraska - 1993? (what was thought to be their "final" gig)
5. Roosevelt Franklin at The Edge, Lincoln Nebraska, 1993? (one of their last performances)
6. Mr. Bungle, Moe's Tavern, Seattle Washington c. 1997
7. Bobby Conn, Brownies, New York NY November 10 2001
8. Hanson, Orpheum Theatre Vancouver BC August 2000
9. Hanson, Recher Theatre Towson MD August 9 2003
10. Hanson, Schuba's Tavern Chicago IL August 20 2003

So if you wonder why I like Hanson, that's why.

Confusing though it may be, those voices you hear are (respectively) Isaac, Taylor and Zac Hanson, saying "hello" to you all. Given the time constraints and the general losing of my shit (figuratively) being in the immediate presence of the bros. Hanson, I had a hard time explaining to them, and you, what was going on there.

In short, I came to Chicago with NO Hanson ticket, no "in" and no real hope of getting into the sold-out show. Regardless, I stood outside of Schuba's by the stage door for three hours in a sweltering upper-nineties Chicago heat with a number of other females and a stray male or two, ranging from about 16 to 49 yrs, including parents. Once again I found myself in my own demographic, as I couldn't positively identify anyone there besides me between the ages of 25 and 39. And for no particular reason other than the fact I was prominently displaying my Hanson.net fanclub card and smiled sweetly, the tour manager picked me out of the crowd, gave me a blue "V.I.P." pass and shuttled me up to the Hanson Meet & Greet room with about ten other lucky gals.

The actual "meet" began as you can hear above. I hung up the phone and tried to explain (not well) what an "audioblog" is, and shook all their hands, and told them I loved the show in Baltimore and that they were so great and junk, and then I posed for a photo that is now posted at the Hanson.net website (if I can find a non-members link I'll let you know) and that was that. As I was walking away, Ike and Taylor thanked me for coming to the show and Zac said "I hope it works out!" and it took me a second to figure out what he was talking about...of course, the audblog!

Yes, Zac, I think it did.

Crazy Beautiful

Laura's review of the Hanson concert I attended in Maryland (courtesy of Bright and Beautiful) is a gorgeous piece of writing. Check it out.

She also offers another take on the cause of the NYC blackout...

Laura just plain rocks, frankly.

Flashlight Mob

Robot Filter reports on the most ambitious flash mob yet. [thanks to cheesebikini?]

Matthew offers another explanation...

Which reminds me, I didn't make it to Seattle's first Flash Mop this morning. Alas, breakfast with other friends took precedence, plus spending the afternoon cleaning didn't hold much appeal after having quite a lot of wine between the hours of noon and 10pm yesterday (the wedding of dear friends), not to mention that the address does not, in fact, exist.

I'm feeling a little survivor's guilt for spending Thursday sunning in my friends' backyard rather than being stuck in a subway for several hours, but not too much. On this, my first day in front of a computer or with any real access to news of the well-being of my friends and adopted city (how did I end up with friends who don't own televisions OR computers??), it appears that New Yorkers have weathered this with the usual grace and good humor. I can't say that I would have been so agreeable, so probably best that I'm here until air conditioners can be safely used again.

So, I'm off to roam the streets of Seattle. I hope your week is mercifully uneventful.
