Friday, July 18, 2003 Trachtenburgs on TV August 28 From a Billboard article regarding the Sundance Channel's new mini-series "Keeping Time: New Music From America's Roots:" For Jason Trachtenburg, patriarch of the Trachtenburg Family Slide Show Players, appearing in the "Art of Song" episode, which debuts Aug. 28, could bring about great results. "My hopes for the documentary are twofold," he says. "We want to have a career in the arts. I would love to be able to write songs for anyone who would like to have songs written that I feel I can deal with. It's my only marketable skill. Our other intention with this airing on the Sundance Channel is that if a movie gets made about the Trachtenburg Family Slide Show Players, I'd like to have Robert Redford play me." I guess the time I kissed an old flame on Christmas vacation while my boyfriend was back at home, but I declined to do more and thus avoided certain damnation (though after the boyfriend and I broke up I wished I had gone for it). 2. When was the last time you stole? Does sneaking into a movie count? I think it was when I saw Blue Crush, then. Also I may have, at one time or another, used pirated software. And I've downloaded a song or two - but only those that were unreleased or otherwise unavailable through legitimate means. 3. When was the last time you lied? Probably earlier today when I told my boss that I had been "too busy" to get to something when really I was "too lazy." As far as outright, full-on lies, I'm very bad at it; I blush. 4. When was the last time you broke or vandalized another's property? I don't think I've ever broken anyone else's property on purpose. I've done so by accident but I don't remember the last time. 5. When was the last time you hurt a loved one? I have hurt my mom's and my sister's feelings a few times but I never mean it. I maintain that they are too sensitive (this in itself will probably hurt their feelings, so its an endless cycle... posted by Ginger | 4:07 PM Born to Blog While I was back in Lincoln, I found a diary which I started in 1978 when I was in second grade. It was shockingly reminiscent of my recent blogs. Here are some sample entries: Sunday 1-1-78 It is a butiful day outside but it is getting colder. I went to a movie called close encounters. when I came back it was FREEZING! Monday 1-2-78 It is a nice day outside. I am at my grandmas house right now and Im watsching Sesame Street. and I HUNGRY! [in between these entries I was briefly hospitalized for an appendectomy, which I somehow didn't consider worthy of recording.] Monday 3-6-78 School was O.K. and I had a apoitment with the Doc. so he could look at my scar and I skinnd my arm on the metel bookcase in my room and my mom was scared to let us read a page in her high school Diary. posted by Ginger | 11:40 AM Thursday, July 17, 2003 MOB 4 Sadly, I had to miss yesterday's MOB since I was just getting home from the airport when it happened. It sounded both more fun and more troubling than the last one, according to this report courtesy of Fancy Robot. Satan's Laundromat also comments on the problems of improper dispersal and the presence of professional media. I agree that the impact of MOB is seriously diluted if hundreds of people hang out in front of the MOB location afterwards. The original idea as stated in the invitations and instruction sheets is that everyone will show up at once (not slowly over a 5-10 minute period) and leave the area completely at the end (not linger around on the sidewalk for 15 minutes). By ignoring the plan and drawing the MOB out beyond the strict "no-more-than-ten-minutes" rule, MOB participants are just giving police and business owners ammunition to actively oppose MOBs by saying they block public sidewalks, interfere with private businesses or cause disruptions - accusations that could result in heavier police presence and perhaps even arrests. That would be no fun at all. Also the increasingly obvious presence of the media - with cameras, ladders, recording equipment, etc. - makes each MOB into an obvious "event" rather than something - as originally conceived - inexplicable. Maybe having them so frequently (every two weeks, it seems) might be a bad idea. I would say abandoning the regular schedule and having them at random intervals a few times a year will let it fall off the radar a bit and thus be more surprising when it does happen. As always, cheesebikini? is a good place to find other links and photos about MOBs in NYC and elsewhere. posted by Ginger | 3:53 PM Who is Watching the Watchmen? Me me me! Wil reports that The Watchmen movie is - for real this time - coming! This is a fantastic story, in every sense, and I hope they manage to put it together as well as they have done the X-Men franchise, which amazingly enough has become the model for success in the comic book genre... posted by Ginger | 1:55 PM Subway Loony of the Week (from this morning, pretty much verbatim) [Loudly sobbing] Oh my god. Oh my god. Oh my god in heaven why? Please god tell me why, tell me why, please tell me why. How could I be so stupid? Oh god how could I be so stupid?! Oh god, I can't take it, I just can't take it! Oh my god in heaven, how could I have LOST MY METROCARD??!!! ****** I returned last night after five days in Nebraska visiting the family and assorted friends. It was pretty much non-stop food events and various hanging out, so I didn't have any blogging or email time. So until I have more time to update, I'll just say it was a good time, and too short as always. And I managed to see Hulk finally - in an almost deserted theatre. I didn't think it was as bad as many reviews make it out to be, but it wasn't great. I didn't have any problem with the idea of replacing action with family drama as the core of a 'comic book' movie, but as my dad said: "I know what they were trying to do, but it won't work." I dunno - it was slow at times and I didn't find myself caring a whole lot about Bruce's troubled history, and some of the chase/battle scenes were just TOO ridiculous, and the mutant dogs were a little much, and Nick Nolte was a lot much, and they were a little too careful about making sure you knew that Hulk wasn't killing anybody, and the fact that his pants stayed on (except that one time, which helped the scene, I thought) was beyond my capacity for suspension-of-disbelief . On the other hand, I thought the Virtual Hulk himself was convincing enough to elicit "King Kong"-style sympathy, and I did like all the smashing-up stuff and I managed to stay interested. Eh, maybe a B-. posted by Ginger | 1:17 PM |
