Friday, July 11, 2003 Arrrr! Nell and I saw Pirates of the Caribbean tonight and we LOVED it. I figured it would be fun, but I didn't expect to so thoroughly enjoy myself. Johnny Depp was brilliant, funny and go-ho-horgeous. Everyone else was fine-to-great too, but he's the reason to see the movie. There's a plot 'n' romance 'n' stuff but who cares -- Johnny Depp's a goddamn pirate!! Go see it. Don't feel that you have to take my word for it - John liked it too. posted by Ginger | 3:53 AM A Blast from the Past Friday Five 1. Do you remember your first best friend? Who was it? Yes. Her name is Amy, and her grandmother lived a door or two down from my grandmother. We are almost exactly the same age, and we played together as soon as we were old enough to play. I think we were best friends until I started school and met other 'best friends.' 2. Are you still in touch with this person? Nope. She lived in a different town, so once we started school she didn't come to town quite as often. Also sometime while I was in grade school my grandmother moved out of the neighborhood, so that pretty much ended the contact. 3. Do you have a current close friend? I'm lucky enough to have a few. 4. How did you become friends with this person? If you mean my 'best' friend, I met her while I was looking for a room in a house share. I decided not to live with her then, but we liked each other right away, so we started hanging out. A few years later we ended up living in a house share together, a different house. 5. Is there a friend from your past that you wish you were still in contact with? Why? It's not so much that I wish we were still in contact but I'm just curious what happened to him. His name is Dylan and we were friends for less than a year when I was around five or six years old. I'm interested in finding him I guess because it's pretty much an impossible task (helloooo, Internet!). I don't know his last name or his mom's name. We were friends when I was in first grade at McPhee Elementary (it used to be called "Claire McPhee Laboratory School") in Lincoln, Nebraska, but I'm not entirely sure if he even went to my school. Here are every single one of my memories of Dylan:
So every time I hear or read about someone near my age named "Dylan" (and considering I was born in 1969, there are a LOT of Dylans my age) I try to figure out if I recognize him. I was convinced for a while that Dylan Carlson of the Seattle band Earth was the Dylan, but I have absolutely no reason to believe that is true. posted by Ginger | 1:33 AM Thursday, July 10, 2003 BabyInk You're NEVER too young to have images permanently embedded in your skin! Obviously it's bullshit, but some of the pictures are kinda cute. I like the little girl with the scorpion on her arm. posted by Ginger | 6:04 PM So many booby shirts! Bright and Beautiful has a great review of Hanson's mini-set at the LifeBeat concert in, um, L.A. I think (see 6.22.03 entry: "Live from the Swoon Pit"). It's an all-too-accurate depiction of a Hanson concert in progress, by a (relatively) objective outsider. Highlight: how said (relatively) objective outsider goes full-on bonkers for a hunkdafied Zac. posted by Ginger | 2:08 PM MOB 4 From the e-mail I got today: FAQ Q. Why would I want to join an inexplicable mob? A. Tons of other people are doing it. Q. Why did the plans to MOB #3 change? A. The National Guardsmen with machine guns had something to do with it. Q. What should I do with my MOB $1 bill? A. Spend it, if you like. But you may be asked to make another, for a future MOB. Q. Can we do a MOB downtown, for a change? A. Sure. I'm coming back from Lincoln that night, just before the MOB starts, so I don't think I'll make it. :( I hope everyone has fun!! For good info on the MOBs, pictures, updates and so forth - check cheesebikini?. posted by Ginger | 12:11 PM Wednesday, July 09, 2003 Huh-huh. Heh. Maybe I'm punchy from being up until 4:30am finishing the new Harry Potter, but two things have made me laugh so far today: This New York Times movie review: The action comedy "Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl" raises one of the most overlooked and important cinematic questions of our time: Can a movie maintain the dramatic integrity of a theme park ride? [more] And this inspired feature in the Brit tabloid, The Sun. [many, many thanks to John for the link!!] ... about that article - it struck me immediately how differently the U.S. press (and, I fear, Americans in general) would react to the same situation in our country. Never, never would the press show a photo of a six-year-old girl holding such a... pornographic toy! Because, you know, there's nothing more sexually provocative than a bright green stuffed monster. The offending item would instead be shown (waist-up, of course) tagged as evidence for the inevitable child-endangerment lawsuit, with the (anonymous for her own protection) child immediately whisked into weeks of counseling. It is so refreshing to see that at least some people out there are not traumatized by the very thought of human (or in this case, irradiated, genetically-mutated human, rendered in plush form) body parts. posted by Ginger | 11:59 AM Tuesday, July 08, 2003 Grandpa Jerry I stumbled across this today... Jerry (Jaroslav) Adam of Omaha, whose parents immigrated there from Bohemia, became known as the Nebraska's professor of wrestling. Upon enrolling at the University of Nebraska, he lettered in both football and wrestling. After graduation, Jerry was named the University of Nebraska mat coach. For 14 years he produced top athletes who proved their skill throughout the US. He went on to also become the University assistant football coach and line coach, both at Nebraska and later at Wesleyan University. In addition to coaching, he also made his professional mat debut in wrestling. His wrestling career included bouts throughout the Mid-west, where he was always a favorite. In his some 1,500 wrestling bouts, Jerry remained a champion who could be depended upon to thrill his fans with his chancery bar-lock, reverse body-lock, or crushing toe-hold. His widow, my grandma, turns 90 this weekend. We miss you, Jaroslav! posted by Ginger | 4:54 PM Monday, July 07, 2003 not-quite dreamlog I woke up this morning (overslept 2 hours) intending to report my dream, again, but now I've forgotten it completely. I do know that it had nothing to do with dating any celebrities. Also, in my weekend wrapup I neglected to mention that I accidentally got to see Serena beat Venus while I was visiting the neighbor's kitties. posted by Ginger | 12:23 PM A Quick Weekend Wrapup 1. Very very hot, all weekend. 2. Saw fireworks from Brooklyn Heights Friday; they were cool (the fireworks). 3. Friday night dreamt I was dating Colin Farrell and he got bit on the arm by some creature which left its 10" beak embedded in his forearm (Colin's). Colin yanked the beak out of his own arm and passed out. I tried to stop the bleeding while someone went to get help. 4. Saw Charlie's Angels yesterday; it was silly (doi) but way fun. Struck me how, weirdly enough, it was some of the guys who I found the most exciting to watch (e.g. Shia LaBeouf, Crispin Glover) but the film gave them absolutely nothing to do. I think several of the reviews out there, good and bad, miss the point of these movies... but I'm not going to get into that now. 5. Saturday night dreamt I was dating Justin Timberlake and we were at summer camp. He wrote me a song, which I hated. I tried to be nice about it. 6. Woke up this morning and had no hot water in my apartment. Not that cold water came out of the hot water tap - NOTHING came out of the hot water tap. Paged maintenance. 7. Met up with Nell and Christy for brunch. We walked A LOT, mostly at Sheepshead Bay along the water. Saw a thing in the water. It sorta looked like a badly-damaged human arm. And then once I decided it looked like an arm, I couldn't make it look like anything else. Took a picture. 8. Bought a pair of sandals (on sale) in Sheepshead Bay. Now have three pairs of shoes still in their boxes in my apartment. I have a very small apartment. I have too many shoes. 8a. Yet never seem to have the right shoes for any given outfit. 9. Went to bed too late Sunday night. What else is new. posted by Ginger | 1:55 AM |
