A Domestic Friday Five!

1. How many houses/apartments have you lived in throughout your life?
I counted once when I was around fifteen and discovered I had lived in fourteen different homes by then - all in Lincoln, Nebraska. Since then, I've lived in four additional places in Lincoln (total of 18), 5 places in Seattle, and two places in Brooklyn. Lifetime total of 25 different places I've called 'home' in my life. So far.

2. Which was your favorite and why?
Difficult to choose, but I'd have to say 512 North 26th St. in Lincoln. I lived there when I was about nine or ten years old, and I'm sure if I went back in time I'd think it was a total dump. But at the time it was the largest house I had ever lived in, and it seemed magical -- so many rooms in strange configurations and with lots of surprising quirks -- the little half-kitchens in different areas (from when the house had been divided into three apartments) and I had a walk-in closet which was a great playroom for an indoorsy kid like me. Having lived in so many places, it was the one house I thought was just plain cool.

Years later I picked up a newspaper and there was a photo of that house on the front page. It had been abandoned shortly after we moved out of it, and then was completely renovated by Habitat for Humanity and sold to a low-income family. They had an open-house so my stepdad and I went to check it out. It was freaky - the place had been totally gutted and re-done, so none of the rooms were in the same place, and many of my favorite quirky bits were long gone. I felt like I was standing in the old house with the veneer of the new house laid over it, like those anatomy drawings or maps you'd see in encyclopedias.

Feeling a bit shaken, I ventured down to the basement, which had always terrified me as a kid. And it was exactly the same as I remembered it, with a bizarre, octopus-like furnace and creepy dark corners. Suddenly I was in the belly of the ghost of this old house, as if it were just waiting to shake off the new paint and linoleum and go back to its proper self.

3. Do you find moving house more exciting or stressful? Why?
Always stressful because my tendency to procrastinate big jobs is exacerbated by the largeness of moving. I put it off until really the very last minute and beyond, and I always have way too much stuff, and not enough people to carry it, and invariably there are stairs involved. In contrast to my childhood, I tend to stay in places for as long as possible in order to avoid the horrors of moving.

4. What's more important, location or price?
Location is key, but you have to choose the best location in your price range.

5. What features does your dream house have (pool, spa bath, big yard, etc.)?
I've never really had a 'dream house,' as there are lots of places that could be great in their own ways. My ultimate fantasy is to have lots of different homes for different moods and times of year. Among these would be an apartment in Manhattan (in which I'd suspect I'd spend most of my time), a villa in Italy, a home in the countryside (location undetermined, something pastoral and lovely -- but I probably wouldn't spend a lot of time there, truth be told), and a place in Nebraska -- in fact that would be my grandmother's house, which was designed and built by her parents (I think) and is super-cool in a 1950's-modern sort of way. The features of each home don't matter all that much, but I am rather fond of fancy-modern bathrooms, like showers designed to look like they are outdoors, or fancy tiling. Architectural Digest sorts of kitchens and bathrooms are my fantasy.

At Least The Cheat is Not Dead

I am TOO BUSY

It's weird though -- during the weekend I'm a total slug. I sleep constantly, I can't manage to do a load of laundry and I can barely boil water to make rice, much less go to the grocery store to get the ingredients to cook. And then at work it is NON STOP CRAZINESS (note the time of this entry--I'm still at the office). Our show is over, but that only makes things MORE busy, as we have to gear up for all those half-baked projects that we've been talking about all year and now we have to DO. It's freaking me out, man.

Anyway, you won't see a whole lotta blogging from me for the next week or so. It's all work and sleep. They do NOT pay me enough for this, for the record. I say "they" but really it's me, since I control the money. So really I should say: We (ie. 'the company') doesn't make enough to put me through all of this, but, see, if I didn't go through this we would never make enough to pay me enough, so it's one o them catch-22 things.

At least I'm still insisting that I take Fridays off, even if that means I do five days' worth of work in four. And okay, I don't come in to work SUPER early or anything. So I know others have it worse than I do, but I bet they get paid better.

That's why y'all don't hear from me much. When I am away from work, I feel I must DO NOTHING just to hold it all together.

By the way, I decided on a news fast over the weekend. No news at all Friday, Saturday and Sunday. I listened to the BBC a little this morning, and nothing much has changed, except that it's gotten more horrible.
