Check Out Broccoli!

I'm so proud! Our lovely and talented "Broccoli" (from the vegetable show -- see Dec. 30 post) now has his own web-presence! Isn't he just adorable? If you're anywhere near the East Coast you should come to the gig this week, even if you have to drive several hours to catch his half-hour set. Hey, it's free!

"You need to make an album and then you need to make a music video, because you're hot." -- sweet girl at Kevin's NYC debut

This is NOT the one who rubs me, by the way. C'mon, he's like twelve.

Bad Habits & Good Readin'

I've taken to staying late at work to catch up on personal e-mail, surfing, blogging and the like. I think this is a Bad Idea, so I am going to go home now.

OK, to give you something new to look at, here's a photo of another sweater I made (sorry, I can't figure out how to post it right on this page. I tried). I'm still catching up on the Christmas presents I'm knitting for everyone. I figure I'll be done by June or so. Meanwhile, it's colder now than it's been all year, and I still don't have a scarf because I haven't had time to make myself one yet. I'm such a knitting-martyr.

I still haven't seen Adaptation, and it's killing me, really.

Speaking of meta-media, I'm reading a GREAT book of essays by David Foster Wallace. I can't believe I've gone this long without reading his work. Well, I tried reading Infinite Jest a few years ago and it was way too intimidating. But these essays I LOVE.

His vocabulary is stunning -- if at first it seems like he's using "big words" just because he can, you realize that it's just that those are the exact right words to use. I can't describe (though I'm sure he could) how something so brainy and academic can be so weirdly sensuous. It's richly decadent, like eating mangoes and dark chocolate for dinner. I read a line which starts "Existentiovoyeuristic conundra aside..." and I practically have an orgasm. I find myself seriously considering taking all of the pages of one essay and wallpapering my room with them, so I can literally be inside the text at all times. I mean, that's crazy talk! But it's all true -- I don't know when I've ever connected with text so strongly. I'm not anywhere near that clever or smart, but damn if this isn't what I've been dreaming of writing since I was a wee undergraduate, when all I wanted was to just be in school for the rest of my life, drinking coffee and having Deep Conversations. And now look at me -- producing barely-literate kiddie theater! I don't even DRINK COFFEE! Oh, what have I become?

Well anyway, DFW is making it all better, for now.

Everyone is Sick

First, everyone who hadn't already got the horrible respiratory cold/flu (fevers, chills, congestion, hacking cough, sore throat) that I had Christmas week got it. Now it seems that everyone either has, had or will have the horrible 24-hour "stomach flu." I don't really believe in stomach flu--in that, by definition, "flu" (i.e. influenza) is a respiratory illness. And I understand that, generally, digestive ailments are far more often caused by bad food than infectious germs. However, the number of people stricken with this particular illness in my immediate circle of friends and acquaintances is truly startling. I mean, I was barfing last week, but that was just the booze. I don't need to do that again in a hurry.

I wish my thus-stricken friends-and-acquaintances a very speedy recovery - AND PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE DON'T GIVE IT TO ME!!!

Love Life Update: I manage to see the guy briefly (work-related stuff) -- just long enough to steal a kiss or two. But the actor's schedule at this particular moment does not allow for actual, y'know, dating, so it remains to be seen whether we'll spend any reasonable amount time together in the near future.
