Saturday, December 21, 2002 The Return of the Friday Five! 1. What holiday or holidays do you celebrate this time of year? Our version of good old American consumerist Christmas. I didn't grow up with any church-goin', so it's all about visiting family, giving presents, and eating too much of the wrong things. Yay! 2. What was the best gift you have ever received? I'm not sure if I received it for Christmas or my birthday, but one year--I think I was 12 or 13--my Dad made me a device that I later named "The Bob." It was a little speaker powered by a 9-volt battery and had light sensors attached to the top of it like antennae. When you waved your hands around the sensors, it made funny electronic noises. It was a kind of primitive Theramin, really. He made it himself and "wrapped" it in a box covered with pictures of monkeys. It was the coolest thing and I played with it a lot. Every so often I wonder if that is still in my mom's basement somewhere. 3. What was the worst gift you've ever given? It's a cliche, but once I really did give my mom -- a lifelong passionate anti-smoker -- an ashtray that I made. I'm sure I've given even more ill-conceived gifts in my older, less forgivable years, but the recipients were far too kind to tell me. 4. Where will you be celebrating the holidays? Are you hosting? Going away? I'm going away to spend a few days in Nebraska with the family. It's just too sad to be away from home at Christmas, so I try to go back whenever possible. 5. If you could spend the holidays with someone who isn't around, who would it be with? Why? Probably my Grandpa Jerry (Jaroslav!), the one-time professional wrestler, because he was cool and died when I was way too young to fully appreciate his awesomeness. Big ups to Jaroslav, yo. posted by Ginger | 11:07 PM |
