The Olympics of Sleep
As you embarrased few who read thsi regularly have no doubt noticed, verbal pickings have been slim this past week. No doubt this is because Will, Greg & I are all in separate places thinking about non-At Dusk things in celebration of tour being complete. It's weird how the normal business cycle of our lives totally reversed this year. June-August used to be revered as good weather and freedom for 20 years we were in school, yet High Summer was the peak of our work season this year, what with PDXPOP, Heights and Tour. So, now we rest. Or at least I try to, as my Mom is redoing her yard right now, resulting in my being awakened every morning by a different sort of power tool colliding with a different material. It is semi-musical, but I have never hated music more.
After writing thank you notes to all the clubs we played at and people we stayed with on tour, and shipping a new set of Heights to CDBaby. I went on a massive birthday-justified, financially disastrous CD buying binge at Aaron's & Amoeba here in LA, which can only result in the aforementioned. For lack of other musical content, here goes:
*Polmo Polpo - Like Hearts Swelling (Jonny D introduced us to this amazing Toronto electro-acoustic madness. Wonderful. Feels like taking an exciting nap.)
*Brigitte Bardot - The Best of Bardot
*Nick Drake - Pink Moon (Never owned this on CD before)
*The Shins - Chutes Too Narrow (while I have never loved this band, I decided I should get to know it better, as i like Kissing The Lipless and the PDXPOP track. Maybe I'm just missing Portland.)
*Juana Molina - Segundo
*Fairport Convention - Liege & Lief (Bryter Layte's backing band and inspiration)
*Olivia Tremor Control - Dusk @ Cubist Castle (Part of the international dusk conspiracy)
*The Decemberists - Castaways & Cutouts (I needed to hear California One/Youth & Beauty Brigade)
*The Kinks - Well Respected Kinks
*The Incredible String Band - 500 Spirits/Hangman's Beautiful Daughter
*Vinicius Cantuaria - Horse & Fish
*Youssou N'Dour - Egypt
*TV on the Radio - Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes (I just can' make up my mind about this.)
*Apostle of Hustle - Folkloric Feel (Arts & Crafts label has an effect on me similar to Abercrombie on naked teenagers)
*Bjork - Medulla (WHAT IS THIS?! A Capella for the e-damned)
*Postal Service - Give Up (If I'm going to hear this all the time, I at least want control over when)
*Beat Happening - Jamboree
*Engine Down - Engine Down (I Pray for another "Intent to Pacify")
*Animal Collective - Spirit/Danse (Like high frequencies do ya?
*Chavez - Gone Glimmering ($7 "classic matador" reissue. I'm old!)
*Helium - Dirt of Luck (A staple of my vinyl collection similarly classic CD repress)
*Devendra Banhart - Rejoicing in the Hands
*Capoeira Angola - Can't remember what the hell this is called. But 'tis dudical.
I am happy and my ears are full.
