An Album Made By Not Us

So, who's yet had the pleasure of hearing Smile? I'd recommend giving it a spin, since it's turning out to be pretty much the pop-music event of the year/ever, and is pretty well astonishing in its quality. Like way, way better than I was expecting. And also sonically glorious, which is perhaps more astonishing.

Meanwhile, Travistan disappoints. Although I can't say it's anywhere near as bad as the Pitchfork junta would have you believe. Just not quite up to the dizzingly high standard set by the last two Plan albums.

In other news, I finally got my phone number back (feel free to bombard my wires now, ye potential employers), so that's good. And I fixed my flat tire today (by replacing it, that is), which is also good. And I'm happy to report that the drum lessons I've given so far (all one of them) have gone swimmingly. On the gloomier side of things, my apartment is still afflicted by an epidemic of shelf-shortage; I'm still, ahem, between jobs, as the above parenthetical might have suggested; listening to NPR is becoming an ever more depressing ritual as I grow increasingly baffled/enraged by our nation's swing-voters; I played the lottery on Saturday and totally didn't win; and I'm really thirsty right now and am all out of juice. So it's not all roses.

To all you drummers out there: I highly recommend you explore the wonderful world of Billy Ward. Most of his recorded catalog is garbage, truthfully (he doesn't have the greatest nose for songwriting talent), but, if you can swing it, check out his wonderful DVD (Big Time). Once you've made a conscious decision not to be put off by his ego, you'll probably become infatuated with his remarkable ears, as I did; I can't think of another rock/jazz drummer today more enthusiastic about the drum kit's built-in sonic possibilities.

So it's onward to tommorrow and beyond! I can't think of the last time I was quite this ready to start writing new music. Doing that is what we should be doing.
