the coward's way

by l.s. johnson

How's your old friend, Heroin?
I hear she's come around again.
You think that she's your one release
Because you feel the agony cease
As you pop her through your skin.

Her embrace is warm and slow.
No one will ever know
You've let her back inside.
She told you this, but lied
And it's begun to show.

I know what you're searching for
As you sit there on the floor
With your quick fix in a spoon.
You keep jabbing at relief but soon
You find you just need more.
(It happened this way before)

Watch out, she's on a roll
And soon she'll steal your soul.
Then you'll have nothing left.
Just ugly scars and death.
She'll make you pitiful.
