Ontrack operates a rail shuttle service in Syracuse, NY between the Carousel Center mall, Armory Square in downtown Syracuse and Syracuse University. They also run excursions. In August 1995, Ontrack ran an excursion from Syracuse to Chenango Bridge, NY. New York Susquehanna & Western #142, a 2-8-2 steam locomotive, and NYSW #2400, an E9 diesel locomotive, powered the train. At Chenango Bridge, the excursion met another train from Scranton, PA, powered by Milwaukee Road #261, a 4-8-4 steam locomotive. The two trains were combined and the two steam locomotives powered the train back to Syracuse. E9 #2400 trailed the train. At Syracuse, the locomotives were turned and a night photo session was held.
(63K) After running in reverse from Syracuse, N.Y., New York, Susquehanna & Western 142 takes on water at Chenago Bridge, N.Y. with the help of local firemen. NYSW 2400 is behind 142.
(49K) Upon arriving in Syracuse, Milwaukee Road 261 and New York, Susquehanna and Western 142 deadheaded to the wye between Conrail's Albany-Buffalo mainline and the Syracuse-Montreal secondary where the locomotives were turned. The 261's tool car went along for the turn. Unfortunately, it was late in the afternoon and the sun was setting so, depending on your definition, the light was either "dramatic" or horrible.
(56K) While waiting for the formal night photography session featuring 142 and 261, I took some available light shots of Ontrack's Armory Square Station. This shot was my favorite.
(56K) This is one of the shots taken during the formal night photography session.
(40 K) The formal night photography session was interrupted by the arrival of a dinner train, powered by one of NYSW's GP18's.
