Troop 275 Outings
Nantahala River Rafting - This is always a fun trip. We try
to take it in July or August, and as much as possible - make it a family outing. In the
past we have camped at the Apple Tree Group Camping Area - about 8 miles from the Put in
point. Other times we have camped at Turkey Creek Campground about 8 miles from the take
out point. We have have always used the Nantahala Outdoor Center because they are simply
the best. Other campgrounds in the area include Tsali Campground - close to Fontana Lake,
and some in the Smoky Mountains National Forest Area. The picture was taken about 6 years
ago - but the fun is the same.
The Yorktown - At Charleston, South Carolina. This trip includes an overnight stay in
the crew quarters on this World War II aircraft carrier with on board meals in the mess
hall. There are special rates for Scouts and special tours. There are also a WW II
submarine, the Savannah the first nuclear powered merchant vessel, and one or two other
ships to explore. Good museum, and good shows.
Horsetrough Falls - This is an overnight back packing trip in North Georgia, not too far
from Unicoi State Park. The camp area is next to a nice stream. A nice primitve camping
area.
Squirrel's
Nest - This is
located in the Unicoi State Park primitve camping area. This is a lot of fun, especially
for a cold weather campout. The Squirrel's Nest are a set of covered platforms built into
the side of a hill and open on three sides. Unicoi has several programs and activities for
the scouts to do most of the year. In addition, there is the 5 mile hike to
Raccoon Mountain - Near Chattanooga,
Tennessee, this is an overnight wild cave tour. If you like mud and grit, this is it.
There is usually only one group on the tour on a given night. You pack your belongings in
a water proof duffle bag , and drag it along with you as you walk, crawl, belly-crawl, and
climb your way into this cave. You sleep in a small cave room, and generally find out what
most cave exploring is like.
Cumberland Caverns - Near McMinnville, Tennessee, this is a different sort of overnight wild
cave tour. Cumberland Caverns has as one of it's features, a huge under ground chamber
used to sleep and dine up to 200 overnight cavers. Multiple wild tours are conducted in
the evening, and a breakfast is included in the morning.
Buckley's Farm - This farm is where we bone up on scout crafts and skills. It belongs to Jim and Barbara Buckly, who generously allow us to us it. Michael, Chris, and Matthew Buckly were all members of our troop, and all earned their Eagle in our troop.
