Apex Belltown Co-op Creating an intentional community since 1982 Live at Apex What we look for in new members Apex is a community where people must be able to live well with others. We look for people who are well versed in communication skills, conflict resolution and group living. We need people who are able to contribute to the co-op and who will participate effectively. We seek diversity of all types, and cater especially to people eligible for low-income housing. General Expectations There are certain expectations of those people who choose to be members of the Apex Belltown Co-op, including the following: · Actively participate as a member of the Apex community. · Attend monthly General Membership Meeting (third Sunday at 7pm) · Serve on the Apex Board of Directors at least once every three years. · Actively participate in one of our three committees (membership, building and finance) and attend committee meetings, which take place at least once a month. · Complete your assigned weekly chore by Tuesday night at midnight (there is a rotating chore schedule). · Actively participate in your kitchen, including assigned chores and cleaning. · Voluntarily participate in organized annual work projects, as well as ongoing repairs and maintenance. · Take leadership when needed and act as a homeowner always. · Respect others, including the need for quiet after 10pm on weeknights. · Pay monthly carrying charge on time, without prompting. (For more on rates, see Costs.) · Purchase membership share within seven months. This money is refunded when you vacate. (For more on share price, see Costs.) · Personal commitment of two years residence/membership. Facilities The co-op consists of two floors with 21 individual units: 4 "triples" approximately 350 sq. ft. 12 "doubles" approximately 225 sq. ft. 3 "singles" (or "Zen units") approximately 110 sq. ft. Ten units are on the second floor, 11 units are on the third floor. Each unit has its own sink, intercom and mailbox. Each unit is assigned a kitchen with refrigerator, cupboard and shelf space in one of the two kitchens per floor. There is one shared freezer per floor. There are one washer and dryer per floor. Each floor has a community lounge. The lounges are where we have our potlucks, parties and meetings. There is also community deck located on the roof, with limited space for communal gardening. Costs When you join the Apex, you must pay a share price to "buy in" to the co-op. The share price is currently at $2,100, which is payable over seven months' time. This money is refunded when you vacate. In addition to the share price, members must pay a monthly carrying charge, which covers Apex costs, such as utilities, building upkeep and loan payments. The current carrying charge rates are: Single $234/month Double $389/month Triple $527/month Process for joining the Co-op If you feel suited to cooperative living, the process for joining the Apex is as follows: 1. Contact us to schedule a tour. During the tour your will learn more about how the Apex operates and will have an opportunity to ask questions. You may download an application by clicking the link below: Apex Membership Application 2. Please complete the application and bring it to the tour, if you do not have access to a printer you can email your Application to us. 3. After reviewing applications, the Apex may call you to schedule an interview. 4. Attend an interview with the Apex membership. 5. If approved for membership, your acceptance must be confirmed by one quarter of the share price. Process for leaving Apex If/when you decide to leave the co-op, it is required that you give 90 days notice. As a departing member you are responsible for the monthly carrying charge for the duration of this notice. Subletting Subletting is allowed but not encouraged. We expect that every member will be a participating resident except for limited amounts of time. Sublettors must be interviewed and approved, and cannot assume responsibility for members' regular obligations. |
