Renovation of the Belltown Cottages

Janurary 2003

Happy New Year! The weather improves now that the roofs are on.
Volunteers arrive to move sand from the alley underneath the Cottage foundations to eliminate low areas where water can settle. Thank yous! to Glenn, Robin, Jay and the kids!
New cedar roofs look beautiful in the sunshine! Fresh gutters are added and connected to the drain system. The work site is drying up.
New cedar siding arrives. The old south walls get re-sided! They don't get clear cedar in 10 to 20 foot lengths anymore. The walls look checkerboard because the lengths of siding are made up of 2 to 3 foot long sections fit together to make the long lengths. It was all milled to match the remaining original siding.
The original windows return looking bright, solid and new. Rehung on the old weights, and the original wavey glass looks great! New headers were installed over the windows and doors to meet current codes.
The electrical and plumbing systems are in. Hot water heaters are on their way. They begin installing insulation and fresh plaster walls inside this week.

The Cottage renovation couldn't have happened without the volunteer efforts of many community members. Here Jay helps backfill sand around the new foundations.
