The Campaign Volunteer's Lament

I am a foot soldier with button and sign.
I work this election for an old pal of mine.
I put up the posters and staple them in,
Hold a sign on the corner with a wave and a grin.

I've handed out leaflets of red, white, and blue.
I've gathered petitions, and I've challenged them too.
I've walked through my neighborhood, flyers in hand,
To stick into doorways saying "Vote for our man."

I've sat in a phone bank from morning to night,
I've written out postcards till my hand seized up tight.
I've buttonholed strangers to give them a speech.
This time next election... gonna be at the beach.
